In Everglades National Park, there are 6,300 acres of karst separating the Shark River Slough and the Taylor Slough, forming what is known as the Hole In The Donut area.
The natural Florida landscape is full of solution holes where the underground waters of the Floridan and Biscayne Aquifers surface with bubbling currents as gem-like springs.
In the Karst environment, the natural limestone is slowly dissolved by rainwater that becomes acidic as it’s steeped in both living and decaying plant matter, algae, microbes, fungi, bacteria, and various microorganisms. This is how solution holes form.
